Calgary students duke it out in Skills Canada competition

Students from Calgary and the surrounding area are battling it out at the Calgary Regional Skills Canada Competition.

On the line is a spot in the provincial challenge in Edmonton, next month.

High school and post-secondary students compete in a wide range of fields including animation, automobile technology, culinary arts, hairstyling, and photography.

“The whole point of the competition model is for students to, a) kind of be able to develop their skills and interests, but then also just showcase those skills, so that they can be really proud of them, because we think they should be proud of the talent they possess in those areas,” Victoria Anderson from Skills Canada Alberta said.

Dylan Skeavington said participating in the event over the last couple of years has opened a lot of doors for him.

“I’d like to take welding on as a career, and I’ve already started in the trade because of this. It’s really driven me to get going in the trades and get my name out there, and because of this, I think — I’m a first year apprentice now,” he said.

The competition continues Wednesday at Delmar College and Saturday at SAIT.
