Calgary Booster Club draws inspiration from the Masters

Another Calgarian will soon slip on a prestigious red jacket.

The Calgary Booster Club is using the Masters Golf Tournament as inspiration, as it awards a red jacket to the 2018 Sportsman of the Year during its 65th annual gala.

“This is a special night for us,” club president Jon Jewell said. “We get to celebrate 65 years of selecting a Sportsman of the Year. This year, it is Lawrence King, a very deserving recipient.”

King is being recognized for over 50 years of leadership in track and field, basketball and work around the community.

“The red jacket is very special and unique,” Jewell said. “Those wearing the red jacket can share their experience and knowledge of sports in Calgary. Like the Masters jacket, it’s unique and a jacket that people can be proud of.”

The gala will also honour Calgary’s male and female athletes of the year, where decorated Paralympians Brian McKeever and Alana Ramsay will be recognized. Special Olympics Athlete of the Year will go to golfer Allie Price.

For over six decades, the Calgary Booster Club has played a crucial role in supporting amateur athletics in our city.

“It was started 65 years ago with a group that got together and wanted to find a way [for] sports in Calgary [to have] an opportunity to grow,” Jewell described. “All these athletes, they just can’t receive enough funding. Anything that we can do, we hope we can help them achieve their goals.”

Tickets are still available for next weekend’s event at Canada Olympic Park. Visit www.calgaryboosterclub.com/sports-gala for more information.
