Nenshi has mixed feelings on provincial budget

Mayor Naheed Nenshi calls the Alberta budget a mixed bag.

“We are somewhat disappointed in the cut to the MSI (Municipal Sustainability Initiative) program, $91 million to Calgary this year,” said Nenshi. “I will tell you that number is less than where we started, I am pleased that were able to at least negotiate a smaller cut.”

But the mayor is happy to see a commitment to a new fiscal framework between cities and provinces moving forward.

“I was very pleased to hear Minister Ceci talk about revenue sharing in the future because getting that right ultimately and divorcing the city from the whims of the provincial government in terms of building things that we need, roads and rec centres is incredibly important and took a major step forward in that way.”

As for money for an Olympic bid, Nenshi said he would have been surprised to see it in the budget, but expects an answer on whether they will pledge money, soon.
