Former Alberta Party candidate guilty of luring and sexual assault of a minor

A Calgary man who was once in the running to for a seat in the legislature pleaded guilty to luring and sexual assault of a minor for an incident involving a teenaged girl.

At the Calgary Courthouse on Monday, the Crown and Defence entered a joint submission with the recommendation that Terry Lo be sentenced to two and half years in prison, which the judge agreed to.

“Mr. Lo was very remorseful. He was very aware of the impact that these charges had on the young person who is now the victim of this,” said Defence lawyer Tonii Roulston. “And as we all heard, his voice broke with respect to his stature in the community and so forth and his fall from grace in that regard. And what he is hoping to do is build back his reputation.”

Lo was arrested in September 2016 after a teenaged girl reported a sexual assault to Airdrie RCMP. At the time, Mounties said Lo met the girl through an online app and claimed he was a 34-year-old named George. The pair later met in person in Airdrie.

The joint submission also recommended Lo serve his sentence at the Bowden Institution.

“Bowden does have a sexual offender program and for these types of offences it seems to be able to accommodate rehabilitation,” said Roulston.

A year before Lo’s arrest, he was a candidate for the Alberta Party in the Calgary-Glenmore riding. He resigned after posting online what he called an inappropriate joke.
