Morneau mum on pipeline discussion progress

Pipelines were one of the main focuses when Canadian Finance Minister Bill Morneau addressed the Calgary Chamber of Commerce Wednesday morning.

Morneau told the room not everything that’s going on is being reported in the news.

“Some things that are going on are not helped in their effectiveness by being on the front page of the paper,” he said.

When pressed for more specifics, the Minister stuck to his guns, simply saying the government is working hard.

“We’ve made our position clear,” he stated. “We think this is an important issue for Alberta, of course, but for the whole country.”

Morneau also wouldn’t say if he expected movement in days and weeks or months and years.

“We’re going to keep working to try and resolve this issue,” he said. “I don’t have any further details for you in terms of when it might be either on your radio show or on the front pages.”

He apologized for not giving more details, arguing it would do more harm than good if he did.

The federal government is leaving close to $1 billion in revenue on the table annually due to a lack of pipeline capacity, but Morneau said tax revenues are not the focus.
