Snow Route Parking ban starts 10 a.m. Sunday

Start looking for a new parking spot now, a snow route parking ban takes effect Sunday at 10 a.m. as city crews continue to clean up after a winter storm.

“This is one of our bigger storms we’ve had,” said Roads spokesperson Tara Norton-Merrin. “When everything’s said and done, it will be about 40 consecutive hours of snowfall.”

The ban is expected to last 72 hours, but the City of Calgary can call it off early. Until the ban starts, plows will be concentrating on Sarcee and Crowchild Trail and other major roads they’ve been moving through over and over again.

“We may get a road perfectly clear and within 10, 15 minutes it’s snow covered again,” said Norton-Merrin about crews who have been working around the clock since Thursday night.

Those who don’t move their cars could pay up to a $75 fine and have their vehicles towed. Snow routes are marked by blue signs with white snowflakes, they’re located on major streets, collector roads and most bus routes and can also be found online.

During two parking bans in February, more than 4,600 tickets were issue. According to the Calgary Police Service, there were about 333 reported crashes between 6 a.m. Friday and roughly noon on Saturday.
