Alberta government making changes to Whistleblower Protections Act

Whistleblowers working in the public sector will soon have better protections in Alberta.

The provincial government made the announcement Thursday at the Alberta Legislature that changes to the Whistleblowers Protections Act will go into effect on March 1st.

Minister of Labour and Minister Responsible for Democratic Renewal Christina Gray said no matter who your boss is, you should be able to come forward without fear.

“Staff in the offices of MLA’s, Ministers and the premier will all be protected should they come forward to blow the whistle, it will now be illegal to punish or fire these employees for reporting serious government wrong doing.”

Public Interest Commissioner Marianne Ryan said changes to the act include expanding the definition of wrongdoing.

“Providing public sector employees a choice of either reporting wrong doing internally to a designated officer or directly to my office in the first instance and by providing employees the ability to obtain remedies if they suffer a reprisal.”

Marianne Ryan adds her jurisdiction now expands to members of the legislative assembly, the premier, ministers and their offices.
