Alberta elite private schools getting millions in taxpayer subsidies

Last year, $27.4 million of public finds in Alberta went into funding elite private schools.

That’s according to findings obtained in a freedom of information request to Alberta Education.

Progress Alberta asked for the information that showed 15 elite private schools received millions in extra funding.

Progress Alberta director Duncan Kinney said public dollars need to remain in public schools.

“It’s about fairness,” he explained. “If you’re a working-class family and regular family and you’re sending your kid to a regular public school, you have to fundraise to provide basic necessities for their education.”

He added the money could be better used to hire 272 public school teachers, 109 new playgrounds or build six new public schools.

A petition is going around Calgary trying to generate signatures to raise the awareness of Premier Rachel Notley on the issue.
