Airdrie hosts firefighter survival training program

A select group of firefighters from all over Canada, including Alberta, B.C., Saskatchewan and Ontario, even including some from New York State, are at the Chinook Winds Fire Station in Airdrie for a four day mayday survival training course.

The International Association of Firefighters have invited 28 men and women to attend the intense program which includes obstacle courses, classroom education and hands-on experience with instructors.

The course includes everything from navigating through electrical wires, getting out quickly from a burning window and what to do if you get lost inside a house fire.

Master Instructor and Toronto Fire Service Captain Geoff Boisseau said, part of the job includes unpredictable and deadly situations.

“The skills that we have worked on have been successful, we have had success saving lives by using these skills and it is important for every fire department to be on the same page.”

Boisseau said around 100 Canadian firefighters lost their lives last year and hopefully training like this will help lower those numbers in the future.
