Calgary rallied supporters of Boushie family

A rally outside of Calgary City Hall on Sunday called for justice after a not guilty verdict for a white, Saskatchewan farmer who shot and killed an Indigenous man.

On Friday, a jury found 56-year-old Gerald Stanley not guilty of second degree murder in the 2016 death of Colten Boushie. The decision sparked harsh criticism and demonstrations across the country this weekend. One of the organizers of the Calgary event, Lowa Beebe, spoke to the Boushie family.

“They didn’t feel supported from the moment that Colten had died and they never felt supported throughout the whole process. They did not feel support or justice at all with the jury selection. Every single Indigenous person that went up there was actually disqualified from the jury,” she said.

Beebe said this case is just one example of systematic problems that many Indigenous people face.

“The prime minister himself said that this has happened all too often in Canada, and our communities definitely know that. We have our own cases here in Calgary, and those families will be here,” Beebe said.

The rally brought out about 200 people and started with a gathering at City Hall at 5 p.m. which included singers, guest speakers and prayers, and was followed by a walk to Reconciliation Bridge.
