Stoney Trail re-opened after multi-vehicle crash

By 660NEWS and City News staff

Emergency crews blocked off westbound Stoney Trail/Highway 22-X in southeast Calgary following a big crash Friday morning.

Just after 9 a.m., 660NEWS received reports of a pileup in the westbound lanes of Stoney Trail between Chapparal Boulevard and Cranston Boulevard.

Listeners say somewhere in the range of 40 vehicles were involved in the crash.

The road was closed for several hours, but re-opened around 2 p.m.

Tyler Christiansen drove through the scene and says emergency crews were trying to get to people caught up in it.

“The fire department is actually walking on the roofs of cars to get to people who are pinned in the middle of this giant jam-up.”

Adam Loria with EMS explained what paramedics had to deal with when they first arrived on scene.

“Very large, scattered scene, now that did pose a challenge for us however, we did overcome that challenge by sending a number of extra units in, as well establishing a field command post, at that scene we did have a number of ambulances, paramedic practitioners and as well supervisors.”

Nine people were taken to hospital in non-life threatening condition.
