Calgary Zoo’s penguins continue to brave cold

It might be downright frigid out there, but it hasn’t been cold enough to keep the city’s hardiest of residents indoors.

After having to cancel Saturday due to weather conditions, Calgary Zoo officials were able to resume with their daily penguin walk Sunday morning.

“Basically we have to set some temperature guidelines for them. That being said, because it can be too cold for King Penguins — and what that means is, once it’s colder than minus 25 — they really don’t need to go outside,” said Trish Exton-Parder.

On the flip side, once it gets to be warmer than 10 degrees, we keep them inside as well.”

Exton-Parder says the birds love it and they start to line up once they know it’s time, and they’ll only take those birds out that want to go.

Penguin walks happen every morning over the winter months at the Calgary Zoo at 11 a.m.
