12-year-old boy dead after a carbon monoxide leak in Airdrie apartment

A young boy has died after being exposed to hazardous levels of carbon monoxide in an Airdrie apartment complex.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene at 10 .a.m. Sunday and began evacuating the building at 700 Willowbrook Road.

Stuart Brideaux with EMS said they received a call about a young child in distress in on of their suites.

“With further investigation from the local fire department it was determined there were elevated carbon monoxide levels in the suite as well as the adjoining complex,” said Brideaux.

Resident Ken Anderson says he was able to get out of the large apartment complex quickly after hearing the alarms.

“I was just sitting there and I heard the fire alarms going off so I was trying to figure out how to turn them off, which I’m sure you shouldn’t do that but, and then I just heard them all out in the hallway so I just went downstairs and I heard it was just carbon monoxide,” said Anderson.

Airdrie Deputy Fire Chief Garth Rabel says they detected alarming levels of the dangerous colourless, odourless and tasteless gas.

“The teams went methodically floor to floor to get readings. We had extremely high readings of 2100 ppm on the second floor which is really quite elevated.

Airdrie RCMP Constable Dan Martin says it is a large building. “There’s 136 units in total, 68 on each wing. There’s a north wing and a south wing.” He adds, the leak was detected in the north side.

Emergency crews were able to find the source of the leak, contain it and ventilate the building.
