Driver was high during police pursuit from Airdrie: RCMP

A possible drug-fuelled race from police ended with three suspects arrested and the recovery of a shotgun that was thrown into a backyard. Airdrie RCMP stopped a Ford F-150 that was pulling a trailer at about 1 a.m. Sunday, after noticing its lights were not on.

Police say the truck suddenly pulled away and almost hit an RCMP vehicle that was arriving on the scene. Mounties say the truck took off in the wrong direction on roads within Airdrie before it turned onto Highway 2 towards Calgary.

The man behind the wheel was allegedly speeding and driving dangerously when Calgary Police Service was called and HAWCS was dispatched to track the vehicle.

“RCMP was able to set up a spike belt that was successful in deflating the tire on the truck. The vehicle lost control within the City of Airdrie,” said Const. Dan Martin.

Two suspects were arrested shortly after they exited the truck and started running, while police dogs found the driver hiding under a deck. Police say he was high on drugs.

“The dog also located a loaded sawed-off shotgun which the suspect had tossed into the backyard while he was running. We were quite thankful that we were able to find that before a child did,” said Martin.

Investigators said the truck, trailer and firearm were all stolen. Officers also found a number of break-in tools and ski masks in the F-150. Charges of possession of stolen property and other counts are pending.
