Calgary’s only winter music festival in full swing

Lisa Anderson lulls the crowd with her soft musical stylings about overcoming heartbreak, coupled with upbeat pauses to sing about a cyclist eating noodles while riding through downtown Calgary.
This is Big Winter Classic, the city’s only winter music festival attracting artists from across the city and around the world.
Anderson played opening night at the BWC’s newest venue, the Garry Thomas Gallery, where music lovers took in local art, cracked a beer and enjoyed the show.
She is one over 70 artists featured throughout the weekend. Director Adrian Urlacher said this year they wanted to go big or go home.
“In order for us to draw more crowds in the bigger masses we need to have some more international talent so we brought in very large bands this year. We’ve substantially increased in the size of our out of town bands, we went from six from last year to 17 this year,” said Urlacher.
The festival runs at multiple venues, including Last Best Brewery, Broken City, Dicken’s Pub and the Garry Thomas Gallery.
Big Winter Classic runs all weekend and comes to a close on Sunday evening.
Tickets for each show are available at the door. Day and evening passes, and the full schedule and lineup are available at BigWinterClassic.com.
