U of C study finds meth preferred drug in Calgary

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – While opioids are getting all the attention methamphetamine (meth) seems to still be the preferred drug for users in Calgary.

Researchers at the University of Calgary spoke to 370 people over the past seven months who use drugs stronger than alcohol or marijuana.

They found 65 per cent of users consumed meth compared with 28 per cent knowingly taking fentanyl.

However, the findings still point to the dangers of fentanyl as it was the top drug blamed on accidental overdoses despite being the third or fourth most popular drug to use.

Also a concern brought up in the report is more than a third of people who OD’d weren’t sure what caused the overdose.

The study comes as the province asks people with naloxone kits to make sure they actually have the overdose reversing medication in the package because some were shipped without the vial of the drug inside.

More than 480 people died from opioid overdoses in Alberta last year.
