Southeast house fire leaves several cats dead and more missing

A house fire in the southeast has left a mother and daughter mourning over their pets and looking for others.

A Platoon Battalion Chief Alistair Robin said fire crews arrived to a home full of smoke at 69 Prestwick Avenue in the community of McKenzie Towne just after 4 a.m. Friday.

“There were two female residents who self-evacuated safely because they had working smoke alarms and they had two dogs and it looks like seven cats also residing, three of the cats unfortunately have succumb to the smoke,” explained Robin.

He said four other cats are still missing but hopefully crews will find them hiding somewhere.

Robin said it’s unclear what may have started the blaze but first reports indicate a blanket may have caught on fire.

The fire did not spread to the rest of the house keeping the damage to the bedroom.

An investigation is underway.
