A spectacular two-vehicle crash closed a busy downtown roadway for about two hours on Wednesday.
The crash occurred at 9 Ave SW at 2 St SW around 11:30 am.
According to a spokesman with Emergency Medical Services, one person was taken to hospital with serious, non-life-threatening injuries.
Sgt. Dan Rogers with Calgary Police Services described what happened.
“The information that we have so far is that a (SUV) being operated by a 30-year old male was travelling eastbound on 9th Avenue when he sideswiped a vehicle, accelerated and then rear-ended a second vehicle that had just left the stop sign causing the Toyota Rav 4 he was driving to flip over,” Rogers said.
John who works in Gulf Canada Square was drinking coffee and witnessed the crash.
“I couldn’t believe it, I thought I was dreaming I’ve never seen anything like this before, I don’t know many people that have witnessed any traffic accidents like this,” he said. “I’ve been watching a lot of movies lately and it definitely looked like a scene out of a movie.”
It’s not clear how fast the Toyota was travelling at the time.
