Police suspect driver in downtown crash was high on drugs

Calgary police believe the driver of an SUV involved in dramatic crash along 9 Ave. at 2 St. S.W. may have been impaired by drugs.

The collision occured just before the noon hour on Wednesday.

The force of the collision between a Toyota RAV4 and a pickup truck sent the SUV hurtling into the air and onto its roof.

In a release, investigators said evidence gathered at the scene has lead them to belive the driver of the RAV4 was under the influence of drugs.

The driver, a 30-year-old man was taken to hospital. His condition is said to be serious, but stable.

Police have not identified the man.

The driver of the pickup truck was not seriously injured.

9 Avenue was closed for about two hours following the crash.
