Nimmons Residence nearing heritage designation

A two-storey Queen Anne Revival-Style house in Bankview will remain a heritage resource on it’s lot near 14 Street and 17 Avenue S.W., even if it is moved within that lot.

Known as the Nimmons Residence, for pioneer ranchers William and Isabelle Nimmons, the house was first on a council agenda in 2015. Monday, a city committee supported labelling the residence a municipal historic resource.

Ward 9 Councillor Gian-Carlo Carra was pleased with the result of the planning and urban development committee decision. “We have protected the Nimmons Residence,” he said after the meeting, “the land use allows an interesting, sort of, development to work around it and if there needs to be some fine-tuning, we can do that without de-designation.”

The ranch house, built in 1898, could be moved to a different location on its existing lot, optimizing the space surrounding it for future development but the 120-year old red brick structure would still retain its historic status.

“I believe that the land use will come back for final reading now that they’ve got the heritage preservation designation attached to the Nimmons Residence,” Carra said. “A condition of the development of the site will be moving the building away from the development and now the question is ‘to what extent?’ And, that might require a fine-tuning of the land use.”

The heritage designation will now go to council for a final say.
