Calgary doctor urges pregnant women to get flu shot

A University of Calgary doctor is looking into why the number of pregnant women getting the flu shot remains alarmingly low.

Dr. Eliana Castillo has established “a point of care” flu shot program at some pregnancy clinics where the vaccination numbers have increased to greater than 70 per cent.

“Based on lack of awareness, pregnant women may not know how serious influenza can be, not only for themselves but also for their babies, and I think that goes with a perception.” Castillo said.

Castillo explains receiving the shot is the greatest preventative care for a baby because the mom passes antibodies to it while in utero.
