Airdire man facing charges for drunk driving and speeding in school zone

An Airdrie man is facing impaired driving charges after being caught speeding in a school zone.

RCMP pulled over the man during a speed operation in a local school zone on January 8.

Inspector Kimberley Pasloske said the man was going 53km/h in a 30km/h zone.

“The officer was very surprised to see that he could smell the odor of alcohol coming from within the vehicle; this is 2 O’clock in the afternoon in a school zone.” Pasloske said. “The officer investigated a bit further and subsequently arrested the driver for impaired driving.”

Pasloske said catching drunk drivers has been a big priority for the detachment and that has led to double the amount of criminal code impaired driving charges since May.

“We have a priority focus on impaired driving as well as traffic safety within our safe roads program as well as we have another program safe nights, this increased focus has contributed directly to our impaired driving charges,” said Paslocke.

As charges have been sworn into before the courts, the 29 year old’s name will not be released.
