Calgary firefighters face extreme conditions on scene

Fire has destroyed a mobile home in northwest Calgary.

Crews were called to the Greenwood Village Mobile Home Community around 5:30 Saturday morning to find the structure engulfed in flames.

Since it was already too late to save the home, firefighters turned to a defensive attack to put the fire out and protect neighbouring homes.

Calgary Fire Department Battalion Chief Al Magwood said, luckily, two people inside had already managed to escape.

“They had experienced minor injuries going out a window and they were examined by our fire crews and then turned over to AHS. We also encountered a non-fire related medical emergency at the same time. This person was examined by our crews and then turned over to AHS for treatment,” said Magwood.

Magwood says the roads are slippery but since there was virtually no traffic in the early morning hours, their response time was not affected.

However, he says a Calgary Transit bus was brought in to keep firefighters warm while teams took turns battling the blaze in the bitter conditions.
