AMA responding to thousands of calls in Calgary

Frigid weather can be a nightmare for car batteries and if you need a boost from the Alberta Motor Association, you could be left out in the cold for hours.

Randy Loyk, manager of technical service for AMA, said it’s important to plug in your vehicle once the mercury drops to minus 15.

However, because many people haven’t been doing that, AMA is dealing with a wait list of drivers.

“We’re seeing an excess of 3,000 calls every day here and a lot of those calls are battery-related calls where people haven’t plugged in their vehicles,” said Loyk.

If for whatever reason you can’t plug in your vehicle, Loyk has two suggestions.

“Make sure that you change your oil [so it’s running with a lubricant meant for cooler weather,]” explained Loyk. “If your battery is in great shape, you won’t have any problems, but have it tested.”

The wait time for AMA is five hours for help with a light boost, flat tire, or if you locked yourself out of your vehicle, while the wait time for towing is between 12 and 16 hours.

Loyk is also reminding people to dress and drive based on the winter weather conditions.
