Retailers increasingly rolling out post-holiday bargains early: consultant

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – It may be Christmas Eve, but some people are already looking ahead to Boxing Day.

It turns out some retailers are starting to roll out post-holiday bargains online as early as this afternoon.

Retail consultant David Ian Gray says Boxing Day deals on Christmas Eve have become a fact of life.

“Everyone is just racing to be the same as the other guy and so there is no real advantage, if anything maybe there is a risk in being left out, or a perceived risk.”

He adds there has been a creep in recent years where one day sales turn into multiple day affairs.

“And it’s part of the same trend we’re seeing with Black Friday, which was really a day, then a weekend, and now it’s a month,” he says.

Best Buy Canada is just one of the retailers preparing to launch deals today, and its Christine Tam agrees one day sales are a thing of the past.

“I don’t know exactly when we started having it on Christmas Eve but definitely for a few years. And then, really, Boxing Day is now Boxing Week and all the sales go through ’til January 4th, both online and in store,” she says. “If you have your heart set on something and really want to get that deal, I would recommend, you know, being online right away.”

But, if you’re more of a brick-and-mortar type person, you’ll just have to line-up with everyone else on Tuesday morning. Despite what you hear about Black Friday, Tam says here in Canada, Boxing Day is still the biggest day of the year for the retailer.
