YYC Calgary International Airport bustling on busiest day of the year

Camped out at YYC Calgary International Airport early Friday morning, 660’s Jonathan Muma found plenty of sleepy faces, but many of them glowing with holiday spirit.

More than 50,000 travelers will pass through the terminals at the Alberta hub on December 22, 2017, (including the 16-millionth of the year.) It’s the busiest day on the calendar for 2017, according to the Calgary Airport Authority.

Walter, partway through a cross-country journey, didn’t seem to mind the crowd. “I just came back from Toronto, heading back to Kamloops,” he said, “I had a chance to make a quick visit to see family and friends.”

Michael and Sue were embarking on an annual trip to a warmer climate: Hawaii. “We go there every year, it’s a divine right,” Michael joked. Not knowing they would add to the total on the busiest day at YYC, he added, “That’s good, to be one of the big statistic.”

Matt and a friend were headed to Texas, to watch football for the holidays, “We didn’t know that,” he said, referring to high volume at the airport, “it’s a good thing we’re here two hours early.”

Thankfully, there were few weather interruptions on the tarmac, Friday, and cancellations and delays were minimal for holiday jet-setters.

Always check your flight status before heading to the airport, pay attention to baggage restrictions, don’t travel with wrapped gifts, and give yourself more time to get through long security lines if you are leaving Calgary by plane for Christmas.
