Bitcoin scam making its way through Alberta

It’s a new high-tech twist on a long-running scam.

Strathcona County RCMP, near Edmonton, say some people have been ripped off by fraudsters telling them they owe back taxes and need to pay in Bitcoin.

Unfortunately, the cryptocurrency isn’t regulated by a worldwide body, so once it’s transferred to an electronic wallet, there’s no way for the victims to get their money back.

A reminder, the Canada Revenue Agency never asks for payment to be made through gift cards or Bitcoin and would never phone you out of the blue if you owe taxes.
