Kenney wins Calgary-Lougheed byelection

United Conservative Party leader Jason Kenney has cruised to an easy victory in the Calgary-Lougheed byelection.

He easily defeated opponents, which included the NDP’s Philip van der Merwe and Liberal leader David Khan.

Kenney took 72 per cent of the vote.

The next closest was van der Merwe with 17 per cent.

The riding became open when MLA Dave Rodney stepped aside to give Kenney the opportunity to win a seat in the legislature.

Kenney said the result sends a clear message to Premier Rachel Notley.

“Stop raising our taxes, don’t proceed with your 50 per cent increase in the carbon tax in two weeks time,” Kenney told a room full of boisterous supporters. “Today, Calgary-Lougheed said ‘no!’ “
