Hometown Hockey sets up shop in Airdrie

Things are gearing up in Airdrie where Hometown Hockey will spend the weekend.

The nation-wide event hosted by Ron McLean and Tara Slone travels to different cities across Canada highlighting stories about the game.

Airdrie Mayor Peter Brown is looking forward to putting the city on the world stage.

“It is primarily about hockey but it’s very much about community,” Brown said. “The show really showcases each of the communities that they’re visiting and the people who live there. So it’s a pretty awesome opportunity to show off Airdrie to the rest of Canada.”

Brown explains hockey is very popular in Airdrie.

“In Minor Hockey in ten years their membership has doubled, they’re over 1,500 kids now and growing and we just opened two arenas a few years ago and we’re already at capacity so definitely the programs are busy,” he said.

The free two-day event includes live entertainment, visits with NHL alumni and a live broadcast on Sportsnet and Sportsnet NOW on Sunday December 17, when the Calgary Flames take on the Vancouver Canucks.

It all kicks-off on Saturday December 16 and takes place outside on the north side of Genesis Place.
