Officials watching for oiled birds after light sheen reported off Fogo Island

FOGO ISLAND, N.L. – Federal officials say they are watching for oiled birds off northern Newfoundland near Fogo Island after a report of a light oil sheen in the area.

Environment Canada is asking the public to report any sign of oil or oiled birds off the island, about 450 kilometres northwest of St. John’s.

The agency asked the public to call an environmental emergency line, and is cautioning against handling any oiled birds as it could cause them further harm.

A Canadian Coast Guard spokesperson said that coast guard environmental response has not received reports of any oiled seabirds in the area.

She said surveillance has detected “some light unrecoverable oil sheens in the area” near the sunken ship, Manolis L.

The spokesperson said the ship was checked Nov. 29 with a remotely operated vehicle.
