Former Calgary Flames blueliner Zarley Zalapski dies at 49

Zarley Zalapski, who spent five seasons with the Calgary Flames in the 1990s, has passed away at the age of 49.

He also played for the Pittsburgh Penguins, Hartford Whalers, Philadelphia Flyers and Montreal Canadiens. He was an Olympian and represented Canada at the 1988 Winter Games in Calgary.

In a statement, the Flames said:

“We are deeply saddened with the news of Zarley’s passing. We are proud that Zarley wore the Flames jersey; made Calgary his home following his playing career; represented our alumni executive; and we will always remember him as a member of the Flames family. This is a terrible loss of a man with great character who truly loved the game of hockey. We express our sincere condolences to the Zalapski family.”

The defenceman was born in central Alberta.
