City council is taking major steps Monday night towards streamlining the secondary suites process.
An overwhelming majority of councillors voted to allow suites as a discretionary use in all areas of Calgary.
It means applicants no longer have to plead their case directly to council and the mayor.
Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi applauded the move.
“It’s about saying to all of the people who live in secondary suites that we believe in you, that we believe that you deserve a little bit of dignity, a little bit of safety and every single citizen deserves to live in a safe, decent space so I am very happy about this,” he told reporters.
It’s not finalized yet, council still has to draw up a new bylaw which will likely to be debated sometime in March.
