Hitmen fall to Moose Jaw, but successful in the Teddy Bear Toss

Calgary Hitmen defenceman Vladislav Yeryomenko scored the highly-anticipated first goal 9:36 into the opening period of The Brick Teddy Bear Toss 2017, cascading a waterfall of 24,605 stuffed toys on Sunday afternoon at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

The record for toys thrown out on the ice, 28,815 in 2015-16.

Thanks to the generosity of the Calgary community and The Brick, over 60 local agencies, including Canadian Mental Health Association, the Salvation Army and Alberta Children’s Hospital, will share the bears this holiday season.

The Hitmen wore special red-themed teddy bear jerseys with snow-capped numbers that will be sold in an online auction opening Monday, Dec. 11, at 10 a.m. and closing Sunday, Dec. 17, at 8 p.m.

Fans can bid on the jerseys along with five team-signed helmets at ElevateAuctions.com with proceeds benefiting the Children’s Miracle Network.

Since the inaugural 1995 toss, the Hitmen, with generous support from their partners and fans, have provided the community with 347,948 teddy bears.

The visiting Moose Jaw Warriors went on to win the game 6-3 as Jayden Halbgewachs tallied two goals and two assists for the WHL’s top team.

Yeryomenko along with Andrei Grishakov and Jake Kryski replied for the Hitmen in front of 18,035 fans at the ’Dome.

The Hitmen have three games remaining before the holiday break.

Wednesday, Dec. 13, sees Calgary host Edmonton, before a home-and-home set with Kootenay.

On Saturday, Dec. 16, the Hitmen travel to Cranbrook before hosting the ICE on Sunday, Dec. 17.
