It’s the loud resurgence of a hashtag that was never fully silenced.
#MeToo and the Silence Breakers were visible terms in many news feeds, Wednesday, after Time Magazine announced its Person of the Year wasn’t a person at all; the 2017 title was awarded to the group of people who showed courage to step forward and stand up against sexual harassment.
They are the voices that launched a movement. Headlined by A-listers like Ashley Judd, Taylor Swift and Rose McGowan, the group also includes the nameless victims, women and men, who too came forward to share a story in what Time Magazine called a cultural reckoning.
The Person of the Year announcement arrived on an already emotionally charged day in Canada, as many social media users remembered the Montreal Massacre; 28 years after 14 women were shot and killed at École Polytechnique on December 6, 1989.
