Mild, windy November with lots of snow for Calgary

Mother Nature is always unpredictable in Calgary but the month of November didn’t seem so bad.

The days were quite mild and there was some snow.

660 NEWS Meteorologist Andrew Schultz said there were no real surprises when it came to temperatures.

“Our plus-3 C for the high and minus-8 C for the low, we did a monthly average of plus-2 C and minus-9 C, so just off pace some of those cold days and cold mornings but when you look at the month as a whole it was an average November.”

Schultz adds snow was a bit of a different story.

“Not that we had a whole bunch of snow in one whole day, or over a long stretch, but a few days of 6 cm here and there, and some cooler temperatures made it seem to hang around a little bit longer, but the monthly average is 17 cm and November 2017: 27 cm of snow, so a little bit to the snowy side.”

Schultz said there were also some very windy days which happens during the shoulder seasons.

“Particularly in the early morning hours or late in the evening after sunset; what is happening here in the morning hours is you build that chinook flow and you got these temperature differentials, strong west breeze mixes in [and] pushes down and we can see some wind gusts.”

All of the snow made for an historic start at the Lake Louise Ski Resort reporting more snow in October and November than for the period in 67 years.
