Calgary hit hard during current flu season: AHS

The flu is back and it is strong this year.

The latest numbers from Alberta Health Services show influenza is hitting Calgary the hardest, with well over half of all cases in the province happening in this city.

“In Calgary, we’ve had the earliest start of all the areas within Alberta,” Dr. Judy MacDonald, AHS medical officer of health for the Calgary Zone, explained. “When you compare that to other parts of Alberta, ours are higher.”

When it comes to influenza B, Calgary has seen over 70 per cent of infections. However, vaccination numbers are good, with nearly 960,000 getting a shot.

“When you look at this same point last year, we’re ahead by over 80,000 doses,” she added. “People are listening.”

The flu season continues until March.
