Couple to appeal convictions for killing six-year-old girl

A Calgary couple convicted of beating a six-year-old girl to death will appeal their sentence to the Supreme Court of Canada.

Spencer Jordan and Marie Magoon were convicted of first degree murder for torturing Meika Jordan to death in 2011.

Court heard that beginning on November 11th, 2011, the girl’s father and stepmother beat her for three days, including burning her palm with a lighter and slamming her head on a tile floor.

They were initially convicted of second degree murder, but the charge was upgraded after a ruling from the Alberta Court of Appeal in 2016.

But on Monday, lawyers for the pair will ask the country’s top court to get the convictions overturned.

There’s a few ways it could work out for the defence, including changing the charge back to second degree murder, ordering a new trial, or acquitting Magoon if evidence gained from a police Mr. Big operation is ruled inadmissible.

Meika’s mother and stepfather are expected to be in court, along with a lead investigator in the case.
