Elevated avalanche risk in the back country this weekend

A word of caution if you’re heading to the back country this weekend.

Conrad Janzen, with Parks Canada, said there is an elevated avalanche risk, due to warmer conditions, in Banff, Yoho, and Kootenay national parks.

“We have an elevated avalanche hazard due to a really warm storm that came in and dumped a bunch of snow on top of a weak layer that was buried around Halloween. So, we’re right in the avalanche hazard as somewhere in the moderate to considerable range,” said Jansen.

Janzen recommends outdoor enthusiasts check the avalanche hazard before heading out.

“Make sure that you have avalanche safety gear, so beacon, probe and shovel and that you have the training so that you know how to use them. Pick trails that are appropitae for your level expertise and if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to get in touch with the Parks Canada vistors safety specialist.”
