Lack of action to reverse changes to federal Disability Tax Credit frustrates many

Lobbyists are frustrated about a lack of action from Ottawa over changes to the Disability Tax Credit.

The President and CEO of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation said since May 1, it seems virtually every adult that’s applying is being turned down.

Dave Prowten said the Foundation has met with the Canada Revenue Agency on the issue, hoping for a reversal, but nothing seems to be happening.

“We are very concerned because we do not want people to have to choose between rent, food and taking care of themselves so we’re really thinking that this is an inappropriate action that has been taken and that’s why we need it reversed as soon as possible,” said Prowten.

“Diabetes is a very expensive disease, so people could spend up to $15,000 annually. This (the DST) gives them a fraction of that back as tax relief. So it’s something we’re really concerned about at JDRF and something we’re really fighting hard for on people’s behalf.”

Prowten said the group also sent a letter to Minister of National Revenue Diane Lebouthillier but have yet to hear back.

The National Disability Tax Fairness Campaign, formed to bring attention to the problem, continues to hammer away at Ottawa.
