Calgary Councillor Ward Sutherland wants more rules and regulations in place when it comes to short term rentals.
Sutherland says they have to look at the business as a whole, and not just one model like Airbnb, or risk the same mistake made with Uber.
He tells CityNews, there have been eight incidents brought to his attention, including a house renting out five rooms in his area, Ward 1.
“People are showing up to go to the room. They’re not sure of the address. They’re confused. They’re knocking on their neighbour’s doors at one in the morning, saying: ‘Is this the rental place?’ One person brought a boat, (and) ended up putting the boat in the middle of the cul-de-sac: people couldn’t get out,” Sutherland said.
Sutherland is putting a motion forward, but he says it’s not to deter people from renting out rooms, or to make the business difficult.
He says he wants rules in place to keep everyone safe, and make sure it is fair to the community.
