Survey finds Albertans know rules of the road, don’t always abide

People know what not to do on the road, but how many drivers actually obey the rules?

A new AMA survey involving 1,800 Albertans says there’s a double standard in the province for speeding and other driving behaviours.

Jeff Kasbrick with AMA says almost everyone who participated believes it’s never acceptable to speed in a playground zone.

“However, 29 per cent of individuals actually admitted to doing it themselves. So you begin to see a bit of a double standard, or a do as I say, not as I do dynamic.”

Part of the issue may be that 65 per cent of respondents also believe they’re better drivers than others on the road.

“But the problem becomes this,” said Kasbrick. “Is if I’m thinking the exact same way as everybody else on the road is thinking, that logic of ‘you being the better driver’ begins to quickly unravel and fall apart.”

The survey also says compared to three years ago, half of Albertans think road rage incidents are worse today.
