Flu season claims three Albertans, to date

The flu has already taken the lives of three Albertans; two of them Calgarian.

About 150 people in Calgary have already come down with influenza, this season.

Medical Officer of Health Dr. Judy MacDonald said based on the numbers, this year’s vaccine will be highly effective.

“We have seen quite a few influenza B cases so Influenza A H3, yes, for sure but we also have some influenza B circulating and the good news is that the vaccine that we’re providing will protect against a number of strains of influenza including influenza A and influenza B.”

She adds, about 160,000 Calgarians have received the shot so far, which is recommended for everyone, especially young children and seniors.

Last year, just under 2,400 Calgarians fell ill and 19 people died.
