Mayor gets annual immunization with flu season upon us

Mayor Naheed Nenshi braved the needle and got his flu shot Thursday afternoon.

With winter approaching and flu season beginning, you can get your shot at numerous places around Calgary and the rest of Alberta.

Nenshi, who once had influenza himself many years ago, stressed the importance of getting vaccinated.

“Get your gosh darn flu shots,” Nenshi said. “It is an important thing to do. You’ve probably never had influenza. If you think you have a bad cold and you say ‘I’ve got a touch of the flu,’ that’s not the flu. Influenza is a very serious disease. It kills many, many people here in Calgary and across the province and across the world every single year. And the best way to prevent getting it is to get the flu shot.”

While there are some other methods to also keep yourself safe, the classic flu shot is still the safest way to go.

“And yes, you can prevent it by washing your hands, you can try and avoid infection, you have to do all those things,” Nenshi said. “But, the way to avoid the flu is to prevent the flu, and the best way to prevent the flu is to get your shot.”

Nenshi got his shot at the Alberta Health Services clinic in the Richmond Road Diagnostic Treatment Centre in southwest Calgary.

Along with AHS clinics, which you can find by following this link, you can also get a free shot at doctor’s offices or pharmacies.

It is recommended for anyone aged six months and older.
