Trudeau issues statement on third anniversary of Parliament Hill shooting

OTTAWA – October 22 marks the three year anniversary of the shooting that took place on Parliament Hill that took the life of Corporal Nathan Cirillo.

In 2014, Michael Zehaf-Bibeau shot Cirillo while he was standing guard at the War Memorial.

He than walked into Parliament Hill’s Centre Block, passing a caucus meeting where several members of parliament, including then Prime Minister Stephen Harper, were gathered.

Shortly following those events, a shootout took place inside parliament, where Zehaf-Bibeau was killed.

On Sunday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau issued a statement on the attack, and the one that took place in Quebec two days prior:

“As we mourn today the loss of these two members of the Canadian Armed Forces, I invite all Canadians to thank our courageous men and women in uniform – both here at home and abroad – who put their lives in harm’s way every day to defend our country and keep us safe.”

Trudeau also paid tribute to Corporal Cirillo and to Warrant Office Patrice Vincent, who was killed two days earlier that year in a terrorist attack in Quebec.
