Wind warning sparks more wildfire fears

High winds will be a factor again this weekend, raising concerns about more wildfires.

Environment Canada has issued a wind warning for much of Southern Alberta including Okotoks, High River, Claresholm, Cardston, Fort Macleod, Magrath and down in the Crowsnest Pass and Pincher Creek area.

Meteorologist Chris Wielki says winds could gust over 100 km/h on Saturday and Sunday.

“With the strong winds there can potentially be damage to buildings, roof shingles, windows. You want to adjust your driving with the strong winds and be cautious of the wind gusts,” said Wielki.

Wind-whipped grass fires forced numerous evacuations, burned down a dozen buildings and led to the death of an Alberta firefighter this past week.

Officials now say an estimated 750 cattle perished in the fires along with some wildlife.

The province is offering help to the worst hit communities.
