Report: Calgary floundering in equality for women

Calgary ranks 22nd out of 25 big Canadian cities involved in a study on where women have the best access to economic and personal security, education, health and positions of leadership.

The study by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives put Regina one spot ahead of Calgary, while Winnipeg, Edmonton and Saskatoon rank 17th, 18th and 19th respectively.

The group found Calgary struggles with wage gaps. And while women are well-educated in Alberta, the sectors that tend to have the best pay are dominated by men.

The think tank says Victoria is the best place, while Windsor, Ontario is the worst.

The CCPA says Victoria is the only city on the list where more women than men are employed, and they account for nearly half of all senior managers and elected officials.

It also says sexual assault is the only violent crime not on the decline in Canada, and every city still struggles with high rates of sexual and domestic violence.
