The best of the best in the world of cutting horse are competing at the Calgary Stampede Cutting Horse Futurity at the Agrium Western Events Centre this week.

The event, which sees a horse and rider separate a cow from a herd and keep them from getting back in to the herd, runs until Sunday.

Angela Pipe with the Western Performance Horse Committee says it showcases the athleticism and natural instincts of the horse.

“It’s the horse that’s the athlete. It’s no longer the rider,” she said.

“The rider does have some control over the horse with his or her legs but really it’s the horse that is keeping the cow away from the herd.”

There is $400,000 in prize money on the line.
