CPS reveal suspects and victims in July quadruple homicide knew each other

After three months of investigation, Calgary police now say the victims and two suspects in July’s quadruple-homicide knew each other as the search for others who may be involved continues.

After getting arrested Tuesday night, 24-year-old Yu Chieh Liao – who also goes by Diana Liao – and 25-year-old Tewodros Mutugeta Kebede have been charged with first-degree murder and three counts of accessory after the fact.

Back on July 10th, the bodies of 25-year-old Cody Pfieffer and sisters Glynnis Fox, 36 and Tiffany Ear, 39, were found in a burned out car in Sage Hill.

Later in the week, the body of 26-year-old Hanock Afowerk was found at Highway 22 and Highway 8 west of Calgary.

CPS had previously said it was possible that Pfeiffer, Fox and Ear could’ve been in the wrong place at the wrong time, but Insp. Paul Wozney said that had changed.

“All six of these people, the four victims and the two accused, were known to one another, they have an association to one another,” he said. “Investigative theories sometimes change.”

The investigaiton has spanned multiple provinces, and Wozney said Liao and Kebede were both arrested in Toronto on unrelated charges then sent back to Calgary.

The first-degree murder charge relates to Afowerk’s death, but Wozney confirmed they are suspects in the other deaths, which include the accessory charges.

Wozney credited the community and police forces in different jurisdictions to getting to the arrests, and they believe others are involved.

“We have some investigative theories of some other participants, but nothing concrete at this point,” he said.

Wozney said Liao and Kebede were linked to criminal activity, but when asked if that meant there’s gang connections, he only said there were “loose, criminal networks” involved.

Anyone with information is asked to contact CPS or Crime Stoppers.
