Depression in the workplace on the rise

Not feeling like your normal self at work?

It’s possible you are suffering from depression.

In the name of mental health, the Calgary Counselling Centre is encouraging people this week to take a free online test this week.

Cathy Keough with the Calgary Counselling Centre says among employment agencies depression is the third biggest problem in the workplace, behind family crisis and stress.

Keough says in the past two years job-related mental health issues have been on the rise in Calgary.

“More and more people have been struggling with the uncertainty of not only about employment but reorganizations, right-sizing, down-sizing, any kind of sizing which has led them to feel more unsure about their future,” said Keough.

She says there are a number of signs that a person is struggling with depression while at work starting with being lethargic.

“Falling asleep on the job, sometimes taking more risk than is normal on the job, more restless, more irritable, sometimes less likely to take direction, sometimes you can also see increased use of alcohol or drugs.”

She says the key is to seek out help and treatment as soon as possible.

Although October 5, is officially National Depression Screening Day, Calgarians can answer the various self-diagnosis questions on-line anytime this week.
