Storm knocks out power in central, southern Alberta

Monday’s snowstorm is causing havoc on Alberta roads and has knocked out power to a number of areas.

The Trans-Canada Highway has been closed east of Calgary and RCMP are advising against travel on the QEII from Calgary to Ponoka.

The heavy, wet snow has also brought down power lines east of the QEII, affecting communities stretching from Red Deer to Lethbridge.

Fortis says crews are having trouble getting to some areas because of road closures, and some people might not get their lights back on until late Monday night.

A number of communities have opened reception centres including Strathmore, Gleichen and Cluny.
